Thinking about users
2009-04-14 19:01:28
Why does a site get redesigned, whether in part or completely? Often it comes from a group of people brainstorming: "We need this on our new site," or "This aspect about our current site doesn't work." Unfortunately, ideas like these are often based on speculation and the unsubstantiated personal opinions and prejudices of the people running the company. Usability testing shows what visitors actually do. Users are absolutely crucial to the success of any web site.
The burning question ought to be, "How easy is our site to use?" And by that we mean more than the ability to get from point A to point B without broken links. How easy is it for your site visitors to get the information they want? And closely related, how easy is it on your site to lead your visitors to do what you want them to do?
Ease of use continues to be a top reason why customers repeatedly return to a site. It usually only takes one bad experience for a site to lose a customer. Guesswork has no place here; besides, you are probably too close to your site to be an impartial judge.
As always, we welcome your feedback.
